The Forum: where ex-zebras compare stripe patterns.

This page exists as a discussion space for people who have lived through some version of the patterns this site lampoons — toxic 1:1s, weaponised HR processes, mind games, AI-laundered credit theft, "psychological threat" exits. Stories below are fictional samples. The form at the bottom is inert (we collect nothing). If you have a real story, the safest place to share it is somewhere you control. We are simply holding space.

"They called me a psychological threat the day after launch."

Shipped a major release on Thursday. Got the call Friday morning. Was given a "choice" between resignation and termination — but only one of those choices got an email queued before I could think. Access gone in 11 minutes.

"I asked for work-life balance. I got a 6-month investigation."

I told my manager, in a private 1:1, that I needed Sundays off after a 12-week sprint. Two weeks later HR was asking me about my "tone." I never raised my voice. I had not raised my voice in three years.

"My PR review was at 11 PM. My absence at it was a 'concern.'"

Mother was hospitalised. I took five days. Came back to a Notion page titled "feedback themes" with the words holds grudges and can't handle pressure. The "pressure" was a PR review scheduled at 11 PM the night before I flew out.

"They quoted a Slack message I wrote in 2022. In 2026."

The HR partner pulled up a screenshot of a slightly sarcastic emoji reaction I gave to a deploy joke three years ago. It was used as evidence of "dismissive tone." I had to explain a 🙃 in a meeting that lasted 47 minutes.

"I responded to ~8,000 mentions a quarter. They said my comms were poor."

Senior responded to ~14. Senior was praised for "thoughtful, asynchronous communication." I was told I was "always reactive." Both of us were on the same Slack.

"I shipped the project. The senior took the half assigned to me."

6 PM deadline. Manager assigned to senior, reassigned to me, reassigned back. Senior split the task and gave me the harder half. When I took full ownership and finished both, I had a complaint against me by Monday.

"My 'first and final written warning' arrived 3 weeks before bonus cycle."

Convenient timing. Smaller bonus. Followed by a "supportive" recommendation to use the EAP. I'd never heard the EAP mentioned in any other context.

"They told me my probation approval was 'the biggest moment of my life.'"

Peers at my level got promoted in the same cycle. I was told to be grateful. The gratitude lasted exactly until the next 1:1.

"At lunch, my manager told me about firing someone for 'a bleeding ear'."

I laughed nervously. I think a note was made. I never ate lunch in that room again.

Forum guidelines

How we keep this place safe and (legally) boring.

① Anonymity, always

Don't name your company. Don't name your manager. Don't name the HR partner. Talk in patterns. Patterns are protected. Names are not.

② We collect nothing

The form on this page is inert. Nothing is sent. Nothing is stored. Nothing is logged. There is no backend. If you want a record of your story, keep it on your own device.

③ Pattern over person

Every story here is reframed as a generic pattern. We are documenting industry-wide behaviour, not specific incidents. This protects both you and us.

④ No defamation

Posts that name specific organisations, individuals, or that present unverified claims as fact will not be displayed. Satire only works when no one is identifiable.

⑤ Be kind to each other

Most people on this forum are still recovering. Treat them like you wished your last manager had treated you.

⑥ When in doubt, don't post

Talk to a friend. Talk to a therapist. Talk to a labour lawyer. The internet is a poor substitute for any of those, and an excellent substitute for none of them.

Share your story (inert form)

This form does not submit anywhere. It writes nothing to disk, network, or memory. It exists so you can practise typing your story before you share it somewhere that does. Pretend, if it helps, that you are writing the email you wish you'd been brave enough to send.

By clicking "Pretend to post" you confirm you understand nothing will be sent anywhere.
